To celebrate Mother's Day, we had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Bruhn and Delia Folk, a mother-daughter duo who co-founded The Style That Binds Us. Their women's media company aims to empower women by simplifying the process of getting dressed. Through their innovative platform, Alison and Delia are inspiring women to feel confident and stylish every day.
First of all... what's it like running a company with your mother/daughter? How do you set boundaries in your personal and professional relationships to help you thrive in both?
Delia: We love working together! It is really special as entrepreneurs to create something from nothing together that impacts people’s lives for the better.
Alison: When you’re an entrepreneur, you don’t really have a boundary between your business & personal life.
How did you come up with the name "The Style That Binds Us”?
Delia: Mom came up with it! We were playing around with different ideas, but The Style That Binds Us is the perfect expression of who we are. We are bound by the fact that we are mother & daughter as well as our shared love of style, but we are all bound together through style. Our company is all about community & empowering others.
How did you come up with the idea for The Style That Binds Us?
Alison: It was an organic evolution and a melding of what we were doing individually because we realized we would reach more people. We paid close attention to questions people asked us over & over again, and wanted to share that knowledge with as many people as possible.
How would you both describe your personal senses of style? Do they clash or compliment each other?
Delia: Mom’s is more minimal and tailored. My sense of style has to do with my mood, the occasion, the weather, etc. I could rock a moto jacket by day, change to a romantic/floral dress for a weekend party, change to a suit for meetings, etc. I try to be really thoughtful about how I want to present myself and what vibe I’m going for for every occasion.
A lot of personal style has to do with your body type/coloring as well as your personality.
What's your go-to Spring outfit? Are there any accessories you've been obsessed with recently?
Delia: For weekends, I love my “Let It Be” Beatles tee with my denim skirt and Converses. For weekdays, I love professional attire by M.M. LaFleur, for galas ONE33 Social is the perfect option and for weeknights it really depends on the occasion!
Alison: The maxi dresses that I have from ONE33 Social because I can dress them up or down. The accessory I am obsessed with is my Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff
If you could only fit three items in your purse, what would they be and why?
Delia: Clutch battery, lipgloss and business cards.
Alison: Clutch battery, glasses, lipstick
The weather can be SO unpredictable this time of year. What are your favorite Spring styling tips?
Layer!
